Reflections of a Hot Trip in the Cool of the NW

I am going to do this blog in topics, not in chronological order. The biggest topic was HEAT!!!   I am a true NW gal - the heat almost crippled me at times.  But what a wondrous part of the West - I will return some May or October.  I was so lucky to have a personal guide.  I hope these posts help you plan a similar trip.

The best thing my guide and friend, Joan Edwards, did was bring a huge jug of very cold water.  It was better than beer! And it is impossible to not get tan - I have never been so brown!  After a few days of the heat, I HAD to know how hot it was, so I bought a thermometer.  I got so I could nap when it was down to 92 - at first it was 88.  One day in Goblin Valley, I sat immobile for 2 hours until the temperature dropped below 95.  Then I could move....by evening it was cool enough (high 80's) to hike.  As Kurt Vonnegut would say, "and so it goes,,,," in Utah!

Why Hearts?  No, there was no romance.  Get that out of your mind.  I have always collected heart rocks when I travel or hike.  No reason or superstition.  I found one in Little Wild Horse Canyon, that had a hole in the center & is now a Christmas ornament!  The rest sit in my window for a year.  Every spring they go out under my Camellia, or into a pot with a plant.  I guess I just have a warm fuzzy feeling for the places I visit!
